The Prostate

The prostate is a gland located next to the bladder. It's function is to produce the fluid that lubricates semen. It is involved in urinary and sexual function.

 

Conditions related to the prostate:​​​

  • Prostatitis - this is inflammation of the prostate due to infection. Prostatitis can lead to worsening urinary symptoms, pain and blood in the semen.

Prostate disease

  • BPH - this is enlargement of the prostate that leads to urinary symptoms in men such as difficulty passing urine, poor flow and going frequently to pass urine during the day or night. Mr. Cleaveland offers diagnosis, assessment and treatment of BPH.
     

    • Rapid diagnosis and assessment of urinary symptoms:

      • Flow rate studies and post void residual scanning

      • Flexible cystoscopy - camera inspection of the urethra, prostate and bladder

      • Prostate volume assessment with ultrasound or MRI scan

    • Treatments offered:

      • Medical treatment of male urinary symptoms

      • Bipolar transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) - an effective treatment with less risk of bleeding compared to traditional monopolar TURP.

      • Rezum water vaporisation of the prostate - a minimally invasive treatment greatly reducing the risk of incontinence and sexual dysfunction.

      • Robotic simple prostatectomy - removal of the inner part of the prostate with minimally invasive robotic surgery specifically for very large prostate glands.

Prostate Cancer

  • This is the most common cancer in men affecting 1:8 men. When diagnosed early it is effectively treated. It often doesn't cause symptoms but can be associated with urinary symptoms.
     

    • Tests and diagnosis

      • Rapid diagnosis and treatment

      • PSA blood test (prostate specific antigen)

      • EpiSwitch PSE - a new 94% accurate advanced blood test for detecting prostate cancer

      • 3 Tesla multiparametric MRI scan on the prostate

      • Prostate biopsies (transperineal) - ultrasounds and MRI fusion guided. Accurate with less risk of infection.

    • Treatments offered by Mr. Cleaveland:

      • Robotic Surgery: state-of-the-art robot assisted surgery with the Da Vinci Xi robot, providing patients with minimally invasive treatment options and faster recovery times.

        • Robotic prostatectomy with nerve sparing - the removal of the prostate to treat cancer.

        • Retzius-sparing prostatectomy - robotic removal of the prostate to treat cancer preserving vital structures leading to improved functional recovery, in particular early return of urinary continence.
