About Me.

Mr. Paul Cleaveland graduated from the University of Birmingham medical school in 2009 and then moved to Manchester to complete foundation training. He completed core surgical training and urology specialty training in the North West region. During this time he completed a Post-graduate Certificate in Workplace Based Post-graduate Medical Education at Edge Hill University. He began a subspecialty interest in robotic and pelvic oncology surgery while training at the Christie Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital. Having completed specialty training in urology he went onto a fellowship in robotic surgery for pelvic urological oncology at the University College London Hospitals Foundation Trust, the highest volume centre in the UK. This involved training in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic cystectomy, robotic urinary diversions and open complex pelvic and reconstructive surgery for the treatment of pelvic cancers. He completed an observership at the Martini-Klinik am UKE GmbH in Hamburg, the highest volume prostatectomy centre in Europe.

Paul Cleaveland was appointed in 2020 as a consultant urologist at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust with a subspecialty interest in robotic surgery and cancer of the prostate, testes and bladder. He also treats general urology conditions. The team at Stockport have performed over 1000 robotic prostatectomies. Mr. Cleaveland performs Retzius-sparring robotic prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer. This technique improves functional recovery in men with prostate cancer, in particular the early recovery of urinary function. He performs diagnostics in men suspected of having prostate cancer with MRI and ultra-sound guided trans-perineal targeted prostate biopsies. He performs diagnostics in men suspected of having bladder cancer with flexible cystoscopy and treatment of bladder cancers with transurethral resection of bladder tumour and laser ablation.

Paul Cleaveland also has an interest in the treatment of benign prostatic disease and male urinary symptoms including medical management and surgical treatment. He performs robotic simple prostatectomy for the treatment of benign prostatic enlargement. He treats general urological conditions such as urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections/stones, and other urological conditions. He performs circumcision, hydrocoele repair, orchidectomy and vasectomy.

Mr. Cleaveland is actively involved in training medical students and examining for Manchester University medical school, as well as interviewing for the national selection of urology trainees and is a faculty member at the FRCS urology exam revision course. As part of the regional urology specialty training programme he delivers lectures on prostate cancer treatment. Specialty trainees from the region and international fellows from Australia are trained in robotic surgery and general urology by Mr. Cleaveland. At his trust, he is cancer lead for urology and is involved in improvement of cancer services, urological cancer diagnostic pathways as well as quality improvement, audit. He has previously been the audit lead for the urology department at his trust. In addition, he has led in the production of patient information videos for complex urological surgery in order to improve the consenting process and the information given to patients prior to surgery. Mr. Cleaveland is actively involved in research with various publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters in the field of urology, oncology and robotic surgery. These have led to presentations at international conferences in the field of urology and robotic surgery.
